LACROSSE LIBRARY BOARD
STILL SEEKING GRANT MONEY FOR NEW LIBRARY

The Town of LaCrosse has applied for a $500,000. Community Focus Fund grant for the LaCrosse Public Library.

The grant will enable the LaCrosse Library to build a new library in LaCrosse.

"Just recently," said librarian Pat Spiess, "we were notified that we were not awarded the request (this round, in the grant process), but, we were told that none of the first time applicants were awarded grants."

"Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 times to get this grant.  It is very competitive.  We are resubmitting again for the next round in March of 2008."

The library board held a public hearing at the LaCrosse Town Board meeting on December 10, 2007.

"Many people showed up to support the library," said Spiess.  "We will be having one more public hearing before the final application goes in again in March."

The library board, librarian, Pat Spiess, and the board's grant writer are presently working to improve this application in an effort to accumulate additional points toward winning an award.

"We scored high, but there was room for improvement," Spiess explained.  "We have had several donations from former graduates of LaCrosse High School for our library, and (as well as) community members who would like to see the library have a new building."

If the grant request can show more local support in the way of more donations for the building project, Spiess believes that support will help the community achieve their goal.

All donations to the library are tax deductible.  Donations can also be made to Unity Foundation of LaPorte County for the LaCrosse Public Library building project.
